In the 1960s, SoHo became a haven for avant-garde artists like Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol and even Yoko Ono and John Lennon. While contemporary artists were seeking large, affordable studio space, sidewalks and walls became canvases, as art spilled from studios into the streets.

By the 1980s and 1990s, SoHo’s artistic reputation drew gallerists, designers, and eventually developers. Art became commerce, and the neighborhood turned from underground cool to upscale chic.

Our tour touches on the dynamics of how street art, a once illegal, rebellious, and marginal form of art, helped redefine property values and push forward waves of gentrification.
